This was one of the toughest half marathons I’ve ever run. I’ve never felt so physically exhausted as I did after this race. The combination of challenging terrain and summer temperatures made this race a real test—one I won’t forget anytime soon.
About the Race
Although a few runners from my group participate in the Sababurg Tierpark Run every year, I hadn’t originally planned to join. It was Manfred, a good friend from the group, who eventually convinced me to take part. “Why not?” I thought, especially since the Sababurg Tierpark is only a few kilometers away, and the course runs right through the scenic nature of the Reinhardswald. The thought of running through such beautiful landscapes really tempted me.
Event and Organization
The organization of the Sababurg Tierpark Run was impressive. Several local clubs and organizations came together to make the race possible. The Tierpark and county administration, LG Reinhardswald, LAG Wesertal, the Hofgeismar running club, and members of the “Friends of Sababurg Tierpark” association all worked hand in hand. Without the efforts of these committed people, an event like this would hardly be feasible. Part of the registration fee even went toward supporting the upkeep of the beautiful Tierpark, adding an extra motivation to take part. Thanks to the volunteers, there were water stations and helpers along the course to keep things running smoothly. A big thank you to everyone who contributed!
The Course
The course turned out to be extremely challenging and held a few surprises. I had underestimated two major factors: the summer heat and the impressive 450 meters of elevation gain I’d need to tackle over the half marathon. The start immediately involved an incline, and there was barely an opportunity to settle into a steady pace. After the first two kilometers, there was a short break in the climbing—if you could call it that—before continuing steadily uphill until kilometer ten.
After this long ascent, I thought the effort might ease off as the course headed downhill. However, the relief was short-lived: the steep gravel path down was so challenging that I had to constantly slow my pace to avoid slipping. I was genuinely concerned about losing my footing and tumbling down the steep path. It was an additional strain that really sapped my energy. Nevertheless, I managed to reach the finish line safely.
Conclusion
Scenically, the Sababurg Tierpark Run is a true highlight. The blend of forest trails, meadows, and the unique views of the Tierpark and Reinhardswald make it a one-of-a-kind experience. But the course is definitely not for beginners. The 450 meters of elevation gain and the steep sections require solid training and good endurance. Without adequate preparation, this half marathon is hardly doable. Despite the exhaustion, I look back on the experience fondly. At the end of the race, I almost downed two bottles of water in a row—a reminder of how demanding this half marathon really was.
Will I take on the challenge again? I haven’t dared to so far, but who knows what the future holds. Perhaps one day I’ll be back on that beautiful yet tough course through the Reinhardswald and the Sababurg Tierpark.
