It doesn’t always have to be the big running events. Sometimes, the smaller races organized by local clubs can bring just as much, if not more, joy. These events often have a charm of their own, offering a more relaxed and friendly atmosphere that you don’t always find in larger races.
It’s in these smaller settings where the true spirit of running can really shine through.
My wife and I came across the 9th Reinhardswald Half Marathon purely by chance. It was taking place just a few kilometers from where we live, which made it the perfect opportunity for us to participate. One of the great things about these smaller events is that you can often sign up last-minute, even on race day, without the need for too much preparation or stress beforehand. It’s simply: “Let’s do it!”
The difference between small and large events becomes immediately obvious when you’re at the start line. Instead of being packed in with thousands of other runners, you’re part of a much smaller group, which creates a more intimate, laid-back atmosphere. There’s space to breathe, to find your pace, and to enjoy the run without feeling overwhelmed. This simplicity can make the experience all the more enjoyable.
The Reinhardswald Half Marathon stood out not just for its beautiful course, but also for its excellent organization. Despite the fact that the first five kilometers were all uphill, the route was well thought out, taking us through stunning forest trails with spectacular views of the Reinhardswald’s natural beauty.
With 286 meters of elevation gain, the course was a bit more challenging than your average half marathon, but that only added to the excitement. Of course, what goes up must come down! After tackling the uphill section early on, the final stretch offered a pleasant downhill run towards the finish line, making for a rewarding and enjoyable end to the race.
The atmosphere along the course was peaceful yet motivating. Both participants and spectators seemed to be having a great time, and the whole event ran smoothly. It was wonderful to see how a smaller local club could pull off such a well-organized and professional event.
All in all, it was a fantastic race through beautiful natural surroundings, with excellent organization – and the best part? It was so close to home. This experience will definitely stick with us, proving that even small races can offer big rewards.
