Fehmarn Marathon 2019

After running my first half marathon on this course back in 2015, I knew I had to experience it again.

The combination of stunning coastal views, natural landscapes, and the relaxed atmosphere made this race truly special and worth repeating.

About the Race

Fehmarn Marathon 2019 CourseIn 2019, the time had finally come. My wife and I planned our visit to Natascha, who lives on Fehmarn, specifically to coincide with the Fehmarn Marathon weekend. It was the perfect setup: a family connection for accommodation, short travel distances, and the chance to combine the race with a pleasant visit.

What made it even more exciting was that Natascha, an avid runner herself, was also participating in the race. For her, it was a home game, and her enthusiasm for the event was contagious.

Event and Organization

Thanks to Natascha’s knowledge of all things sporty on the island, we didn’t have to worry about a thing. From picking up our race numbers to navigating the course, she guided us through it all effortlessly.

Like many smaller races, the Fehmarn Marathon thrived on the dedication and passion of its volunteers. Their warm smiles and commitment ensured that everything ran smoothly. The atmosphere was incredibly friendly, and you could feel the love and effort put into organizing the event.

The Course

The route was just as beautiful as I remembered from 2015: long stretches along the dike with breathtaking views of the Baltic Sea, quiet paths through fields, and finally a large loop back to the finish line.

This time, I felt particularly well-trained and started with a comfortable pace. After the first 10 kilometers, I glanced at my watch: 53 minutes and 13 seconds! I was surprised—it hadn’t felt that fast. My body seemed to be running on autopilot.

I decided to stick with the pace. It was a bit of a gamble, but it felt right. And it paid off: I completed my fastest half marathon yet, finishing in 1 hour, 57 minutes, and 10 seconds. I could hardly believe it and was thrilled with my performance.

Conclusion

Sometimes, things just go better than expected. Without paying too much attention to my pace or the distance, I let myself be carried by the atmosphere and the beauty of the course. Perhaps it was the fresh sea breeze, the motivation from my wife and Natascha, or simply one of those magical running days.

The Fehmarn Marathon remains a highlight for me. The flat course, the breathtaking scenery, and the relaxed vibe make it a must-run event for any runner.

I’m already looking forward to hitting the starting line again. Races like this remind me why I love running so much. Fehmarn has captured my heart once again, and I’ll definitely be back!
