Running Goals

Running Goals

This year, I completed 82 runs. Is that too few? The answer could be yes, no, or maybe. It all depends on your perspective and personal goals. For me, the number reflects where I stand with my running, and my opinion on this topic is tailored to my own experience. Others may see it completely differently—and that’s perfectly fine.

Did I Meet My Running Goals?

No, I didn’t meet my personal running goals. With an average of less than two runs per week, it was far too little to maintain my desired level of fitness. However, I have to admit that I didn’t set concrete goals for myself this year. I simply wanted to run regularly.

For me, running once or twice a week doesn’t count as “regular.” To feel consistent, I believe three to four runs per week would have been more appropriate. Without a clear objective, my running routine lacked structure and a sense of direction.

Goals Based on Mileage

In the past, I used running apps to set annual mileage goals. I could track my progress regularly and see whether I was on schedule. While this approach gave me a sense of oversight, it wasn’t motivating for me in the long run.

A little pressure can be helpful, but I found that chasing a specific number of kilometers turned running into a chore. It no longer felt like leisure but more like a duty. And for a hobby, that simply doesn’t work for me.

Goals Based on the Number of Runs

At one point, I shifted my focus to the number of runs instead of total mileage. I aimed for a set number of runs per year without worrying about their length. This approach suited me better as it gave me the freedom to adjust the distance based on my daily energy levels.

Sometimes it was just a quick 5-kilometer jog; other times, I felt great and went for a longer run. This flexibility helped me keep running enjoyable while still providing structure to my routine.

What’s the Right Running Goal?

Honestly, I don’t think there’s a universal answer. The “right” goal depends entirely on the individual. What motivates one person may not work for another. Still, a good running goal should meet a few key criteria:

  • Challenge yourself: The goal should be slightly outside your comfort zone to give you a sense of achievement when you reach it.

  •
Keep it realistic: Unrealistic goals can quickly lead to frustration and demotivation.

  • Integrate it into your life: A running goal should fit seamlessly into your daily routine. If life constantly gets in the way, running becomes a source of stress rather than joy.

  • Balance with your environment: Running shouldn’t come at the expense of relationships. If you prioritize running over family and friends, it could lead to isolation.

  • Find a community: Goals are often easier to achieve when you’re part of a group. Running with others can provide motivation and make the process more enjoyable.

Looking Ahead to 2025

For the coming year, I’ve set a clear goal: I want to run three times a week. If time, location, and energy allow, I’d like to run four times a week. The length of my runs will depend entirely on how much time I have, how I feel, and whether I’m enjoying myself.

For me, running has to remain fun. It’s a way to balance my life, not add pressure to it. That’s why my 2025 goal is all about consistency and enjoyment rather than numbers or distance. I want running to feel like a natural part of my routine, not an obligation.

Conclusion

Whether 82 runs are too few depends on your perspective. For me, it wasn’t enough to feel consistent, but it’s also not a reason to feel bad. Running is a personal journey, and it’s essential to set goals that align with your life and values.

As I look forward to the next year, I’m excited to approach my running with a fresh mindset—one focused on balance, enjoyment, and steady progress. After all, running isn’t just about reaching a destination; it’s about appreciating the journey.
